Passion With Purpose

A Story Of Giving

At Smoky Mtn Labradors, our kennel was born out of a deep love for English Labradors and a heartfelt desire to share these wonderful companions with others. Growing up in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, our family learned the values of dedication, compassion, and hard work - principles we now bring to raising and caring for our Labrador puppies. We believe in preserving the finest qualities of the breed, offering families not just a pet, but a loyal companion with exceptional temperament, health, and beauty. Every puppy we raise comes from champion bloodlines and is nurtured with care, integrity, and a passion for excellence.

Our kennel also serves a greater purpose beyond breeding top-quality English Labradors. It allows us to continue our family's mission of giving back, connecting with wonderful people, supporting our local Appalachian community, and extending the heart of service that defines everything we do. Through the relationships we build with our clients, we are able to spread joy, provide companionship to families, and support charitable efforts like The LORD's Child ministry, helping to feed and care for those in need. Smoky Mountain Labs is more than a kennel; it is a way for us to honor God's blessings by sharing His love through the gift of these remarkable dogs.

  • What is Smoky Mountain Labradors’ reputation?

At Smoky Mountain Labradors, we have built a strong reputation as one of the most reputable breeders of English Labradors. Families across the country consistently praise us for raising top-quality Labrador Retriever puppies with exceptional health, temperament, and beauty. We are proud to uphold the highest standards set by the American Kennel Club, ensuring our dogs reflect the very best of the Labrador Retriever breed. Rooted in traditions that trace back to Newfoundland fishing boats and working dogs of early 1800s England, our kennel carries forward a legacy of calm demeanor, keen ability, and muscular build. We are not just a reputable breeder; We are professional breeders. Whether you're seeking a loyal hunting dog, a service dog, a therapy dog, or a beloved family companion, Smoky Mountain Labradors is a trusted name for quality and integrity.

  • Do you have puppies available, and is there a waitlist?

Due to the high demand for our exceptional English Labrador Retriever puppies, most families reserve their puppy 6 to 9 months in advance by joining our waitlist. All of our puppies are paid for in full before the puppy is even born. Whether you're looking for a calm, dependable companion or a skilled gun dog for fieldwork, our English Labs, all from champion bloodlines, are carefully raised with love, early training, and socialization to become healthy, confident new family members.

  • Do English Labs bark a lot?

English Labradors are not known to be excessive barkers. Thanks to their calm demeanor and balanced personalities, they tend to bark only when necessary, making them excellent companions for family living, apartment settings, and outings to the dog park. As part of the Labrador Retriever breed, initially developed for work alongside fishermen and hunters, English Labs value meaningful tasks over unnecessary noise. With proper training, early socialization, and structure, your English Labrador Retriever will be a well-mannered, quiet presence who fits beautifully into your home and lifestyle.

  • Are English Labs easy to train?

Yes, English Labradors are exceptionally easy to train! Their strong desire to please, keen ability to learn, and steady temperament make them one of the most trainable of all popular dog breeds. Bred to be versatile working dogs from fishing assistants in Newfoundland to guide dogs and service dogs, English Labs naturally excel at obedience training, specialized tasks, and even dog sports like dock diving and field trials. Whether you seek a therapy dog, a hunting dog, or a devoted family pet, English Labs respond remarkably well to positive reinforcement and proper training techniques from an early age.

  • What health issues do English Labs have?

While English Labradors are generally robust and healthy, they can be prone to some hereditary health problems if not responsibly bred. Conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary myopathy (a muscle disorder), and progressive retinal atrophy are among the most common concerns. Heavy shedders by nature, they can also experience skin irritations if their dense double coat isn’t adequately cared for. At Smoky Mountain Labradors, we prioritize health screenings, a balanced diet, and early veterinary care to give every puppy the best possible start in life, minimizing the risk of hereditary issues and promoting a long, happy, and healthy life.

  • How do I find a reputable English Lab breeder?

Finding a reputable breeder of English Labradors requires careful research. Start by seeking breeders registered with respected organizations, such as the American Kennel Club, which focus specifically on the English Labrador Retriever type, rather than the broader Labrador Retriever breed. Look for breeders who prioritize specialized breeding for health, temperament, and conformation, offering health guarantees and pedigree documentation. Reputable breeders, such as Smoky Mountain Labradors, are transparent about their practice and demonstrate a deep love and knowledge of the breed. A great breeder will guide you through the process, answer your questions openly, and match you with a puppy best suited to your lifestyle, ensuring your future companion is healthy, happy, and ready for a lifetime of love.

  • How are puppies raised at Smoky Mountain Labradors?

Every puppy at Smoky Mountain Labradors is raised with love, structure, and early training experiences to support their development into balanced, confident dogs. From birth, we introduce them to socialization experiences, desensitization, and positive human interaction to avoid bad habits later. Our English Labs, known for their affectionate nature, calm demeanor, and medium-length double coat, are nurtured on a healthy diet and handled daily to prepare them for roles as service dogs, therapy dogs, gun dogs, or cherished family pets. We believe the best dogs come from the best beginnings, and we’re passionate about providing just that.

  • What’s the difference between English and American Labradors?

Although English and American Labradors are technically the same breed, their purpose-driven breeding has created two recognizable types. English Labradors, like those at Smoky Mountain Labradors, are generally stockier, with a muscular build, broader head, shorter legs, and the iconic "otter tail" prized in dog shows. Their calm demeanor and affectionate nature make them a top choice for therapy dogs, service dogs, and family pets. American Labradors, often referred to as American Labs, are typically leaner, higher-energy dogs bred for field trials, hunting, and shooting sports. Both types originated from the same smaller water dogs and lesser Newfoundlands of Canada, but specialized breeding has given each a slightly different focus.

  • Are English Labradors good family dogs?

Without a doubt! English Labradors are among the most popular dog breeds for families because of their calm demeanor, affectionate nature, and love for people. Originally bred for retrieving and honored by English nobles, today's English Labrador Retriever is a patient, loyal, and outgoing companion. They are wonderful with children, friendly with other pets, and thrive in environments where they receive plenty of attention, exercise, and proper training. Their smaller stature compared to American Labradors, combined with their medium-length double coat and gentle personalities, makes English Labs an outstanding choice for homes seeking a steady, loving four-legged family member.

  • How big do English Labradors get?

English Labradors typically grow to a sturdy size. Adult males usually weigh between 85 and 90 pounds, while females weigh between 70 and 85 pounds, with a shoulder height ranging from 21.5 to 24.5 inches. They are generally stockier than American Labradors, with a muscular build and signature "otter tail." Their medium-length double coat gives them a plush, dense look, but it also means they are heavy shedders who require regular grooming to control loose fur. With their solid frame and powerful muscle strength, English Labs are well-suited for a range of activities, from couch cuddles to adventurous outings and even more complex tasks, such as service or therapy dogs.
